Victorian Loan Box

Dorking Museum’s Victorian Loan Box is filled with Victorian artefacts (with a photo and information sheet on each), replica objects and items of costume, photos of Victorian Dorking and a History Mystery photopack.

The objects in the loan box allow children to examine artefacts from Victorian times in order to learn about the life and times of the people who used them.   The objects represent Victorians from poorer homes who had to work hard to earn money and those from rich families who lived in big houses and had servants.  How were those lives different from each other?  How were they different from our lives today?  Further evidence such as photos and replica costumes and toys found in the box will help children to explore these questions and more.

The Victorian Loan Box supports the Key Stage Two National Curriculum History topic in the following areas:

Knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes in the past

2. a. about characteristic features of the periods and societies studied, including the ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of men, women and children in the past
2. b. about the social, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of the societies studied, in Britain and the wider world

Historical enquiry

4. a. how to find out about the events, people and changes studied from an appropriate range of sources of information.
