Driver William James Arthur

William James Arthur was born in Flint Hill, Dorking in 1888, and was baptised on 18th November 1888 in St. John’s Church, North Holmwood. His mother was Sarah Caroline Arthur, no father is named.

In 1901, William was living with his grandfather, mother and brothers (listed as nephews to William’s grandfather – but were far more likely to be his brothers). The family was still living in Flint Hill.

Arthur married Ellen Lucy Blunsden on November 20th 1910 at St. John’s Church, North Holmwood, they later had a son Frederick William James.

According to the 1911 census, William, Ellen and Frederick were living at Rosebery Cottages, Dorking. William was working as a nursery gardener.

Arthur enlisted in Swindon, Wiltshire to the 503rd Field Company, Royal Engineers as a Driver with the army number 5946.

He died of wounds in France on 23rd May 1917 and was buried in Plot I. G. 9, Mory Military Cemetery, Mory, France
