Thank you to Jane Anthony for this research.

Walter Leonard Dell was born in Greenwich in 1884. His father was employed as an ironmonger and plumber. Walter was working as a clerk in 1911, but also described himself as an artisan engineer. In 1913 he married Mildred Edwards in Paddington.

He enlisted in the 5th Battalion (Artists Rifles) London Regiment – number 305444 at Woolwich and was killed aged 32 on 21 March 1918. He was buried at Arras and the citation on his head stone read: Son of James William and Louisa Jeanette Dell. Husband of Mildred Dell of “Bramley” Abinger Common, Dorking. In the record of his effect it states that Mildred and children are his legatees, but no record of births could be found.
