Charles Henry Childs was born in the 3rd quarter of 1889 in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire to laundry workers Charles and Elizabeth.
Charles’ father Charles James was born on 19th November 1857 in Bethnal Green, London to constable Charles James Sen., born about 1828 in Hertfordshire, England, and Mary Ann, born about 1829 in Hertfordshire, England. Charles Jr. was baptised on 20th of December 1857 at St Matthias´ church in Bethnal Green, London. At the time of the baptism, Charles Sen. was working as a policeman.
At the time of the 1871, the family lived at 10 Mary Ann Terrace, Bethnal Green. Charles Sen. was working as a constable and Mary Ann was at home looking after their children. Charles Jr. was working as a paper ruler (operated a machine in the 19th century printing industry).
Charles’ mother Elizabeth was born in the 2nd quarter of 1861 in St Johns, Hertfordshire to labourer Robert, born about 1838 in St Johns, and laundress Ann/Anne, born about 1836 in All Saints, Hertfordshire. Elizabeth was baptised on 14th April of 1861 in Hertford, Hertfordshire.
At the time of the 1871 Census, the family lived at Great Amwell, Ware, Hertfordshire. Robert was working as a labourer and Anne was a laundress. The household further comprised of their children: Emily, Elizabeth, Robert, George and Maria.
At the time of the 1881 Census, Elizabeth was a laundry maid for Philip Wroughton (MP) of Wolley Park House, Chaddleworth, Berkshire.
Charles married Elizabeth on 7th October 1888 at St Jude´s church, Bethnal Green. At the time of the marriage, Charles Jr. lived at 10 Paragon Road and Elizabeth at 42 Hereford Street. Charles was working as a labourer.
Charles had four known siblings: Robert James born in the 4th quarter of 1890 in Clerkenwell, Middlesex; Thomas born in the 4th quarter of 1894; George born in the 4th quarter of 1896 and Helen born in the 4th quarter of 1898, all in Ware, Hertfordshire. Robert died in the 3rd quarter of 1892 in Ware.
At the time of the 1891 Census, Charles’ mother Elizabeth lived at Baldock Street, Ware. The household further comprised of Elizabeth’s children Charles and Robert and her sisters Maria and Ellen. Charles’ father, distiller’s carrier, Charles was staying with his mother, the widowed Mary Ann at 39 Hereford Street, Bethnal Green. Mary Ann had a washing business. The household further comprised of Mary Ann’s children: stationers´stockkeeper James, milliners’ cutter Elizabeth and a cook.
At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at Windlesham, Chertsey, Surrey. Charles Jr. was working as a general labourer and Elizabeth was looking after their children: Charles Henry, Thomas, George and Helen.
At the time of the 1911 Census, Charles’ family lived at Ling Cottage, Lightwater, Bagshot, Surrey. Charles was working as a laundry man and Elizabeth was assisting him in the business. Out of their children Thomas was a carman and George and Helen were at school. The family further comprised of Laura Weeler a domestic help with laundry work. The accommodation had six rooms. Elizabeth stated that she had given birth to six children of whom four were still alive.
Charles’ wife Maud was born on 9th April 1888 in Walthamstow in Essex to gardener William George Salmons, born about 1858 in Romford, Essex and Emily, born about 1860 in Norwich, Norfolk. Maud was baptised on 6th May 1888 at St Mary´s church in Walthamstow.
According to the 1921 and 1926 Surrey, England, Electoral Registers, the widowed Maud lived at 14 Brooklyn Terrace in North Holmwood.
Their son Charles died in 1923 in Dorking, Surrey. He was buried on 8th September 1923 in the Dorking Cemetery. He was seven years old.
According to the 1929 Electoral Register, Maud lived at 63 Beresford Road in Dorking. According to the 1934, 1939 and 1945 Electoral Registers, Maud lived at 18 Nower Road in Dorking.
Charles´ mother Elizabeth died in the 2nd quarter of 1945 in the Registration District of Surrey North Western. She was 84 years old.
Charles‘ wife Maud died in the 4th quarter of 1974 in the Registration District of Surrey Mid Eastern.
