Arthur Thomas Cox was born on 25th April 1894 in Ockley, Surrey to blacksmith Arthur Thomas and Catherine Ellen (nee Jackson). He was baptised on 1st July 1894 at St Leonard’s, Chelsham. At the time of his baptism the family lived in Chelsham.
Arthur’s father Arthur was born about 1871 in Farleigh, Surrey to blacksmith John Thomas, born about 1838 in Inkpen, Berkshire and Jane, born about 1848 in Gloucestershire. Arthur snr was baptised on 26th March 1871 in Farleigh. Arthur’s mother Catherine was born on the 13th of November 1875 in Chelsham, Surrey to labourer George, born about 1841 and Eliza, born about 1848, both in Cudham, Kent. Catherine was baptised on 2nd January 1876 at St Leonard’s, Chelsham. Arthur married Catherine on 6th June 1892 in Chelsham, Surrey.
Arthur Thomas had two siblings: Lily born about 1893 and Ronald Edward born about 1903, both in Ockley, Surrey.
At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at Jayes Park, Ockley. Arthur snr was working as a blacksmith and Catherine was at home looking after their children Lily and Arthur. The household further comprised a boarder, blacksmith, Harry Consious.
At the time of the 1911 Census, the family were still at Jayes Park. Arthur still working as a blacksmith. The household further comprised of their children: grocer’s assistant Arthur and Ronald. Catherine stated that she had given birth to three children of whom all were alive. The accommodation had six rooms.
Arthur Cox enlisted in Guildford, Surrey into the 2nd / 4th Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. He was a Private with regimental number T/3120. At the time of his enlistment he lived at Ockley Green.
Pte Cox disembarked on 17th July 1915 in The Balkans.
At the time of his death he was the part of the 2nd / 4th Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. His new regimental number was T/206530.
Arthur Cox died of wounds received in action on 25th October 1918 in France. He is buried at the Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France. His cemetery reference number is: VI.C.10. The headstone bears the inscription: ‘God Rest On Dear One’. He is also commemorated on the St Margaret’s WW panel in Ockley, Surrey.
He received the British War and Victory medals and the 1915 Star.
His parents later lived at South Lodge, Manning’s Heath near Horsham, Sussex.
