Aubrey was born in Lynminster in Sussex in 1889. His parents are George and Hannah (nee Stuckey Gape).
In the 1891 census, Aubrey’s family are living at 4 Gladstone Terrace in West Tanning, Sussex. He has a brother Henry aged 5, and a sister Gertrude aged 6 months.
His family then moved to Rusper in Sussex and in the 1901 census, are living at Lipscombe Corner. George, his father, is a gardener, Henry is a bricklayer, Aubrey and Gertrude are at school and he now has a younger brother Frederick aged 4.
In the 1911 census, Aubrey, now 22 is working as a gamekeeper. He is living at Taylors Cottages in Capel with his parents and younger brother Frederick. Of his other siblings, Henry is now a gardener and living in Godalming and Gertrude is a domestic servant in a house in Buckingham.
Aubrey joined the Royal West Surrey Regiment on 30th March 1916. After training, he arrived in France on 21st October 1916. He died on Friday 10th August 1917. His battalion were attempting to secure Inverness Copse, near Ypres in Belgium. On that day the battalion lost 282 men including 10 officers. Aubrey is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Plot 43 Row F grave No. 18. His personal effects and war gratuity were sent to his parents who were living at Elderslie Gardens in Ockley. Aubrey’s brother, Harry also served with the Royal West Surrey, he married Amy Powell in 1926. Frederick married Annie Smithers in 1929. Gertrude did not marry. His parents moved back to Sussex and both died in 1944.
