George Ernest was born in 1899 and baptised on 3rd April in St. Mary the Virgin church in Minster, Kent. His parents were George and Margaret. He was the youngest of seven children, five sisters and one brother. His father, George was a grocer. The family had moved around the South East of England and George’s older siblings had been born in Essex, Sussex and Hampshire.
The family moved to Kent around 1894, and in the 1901 census are living at The Post Office in Monkton Road in Minster, Kent. When the 1911 Census was taken George’s family have moved again. They are now living in High Street, Banbury. George is 15 years old. The family then moved to 94 Heldon Crescent in Harrow.
George enlisted into the Machine Gun Corps at Harrow in Middlesex, and gave his address as Willesden, London.
George died on 7th June 1918 in the 58th Field Ambulance; he is buried in the Marfaux British Cemetery near Marne. His personal effects were sent to his Father who was living at Lake Cottage in Ockley.
George Senior had moved to Lake Cottage, Ockley around 1917 after his wife died. He remarried in 1919 to Louisa Coleman and continued to live in Ockley. His daughter Dorothy Maria also lived in Ockley, she married John Ede in Capel on 2nd August 1920.
George’s brother Allen was a Gunner with the Royal Field Artillery, he died in 1917 in Belgium.
