Lance Corporal William Muggeridge

William Muggeridge was born on 24th of March 1892 in Oakwood Hill, Surrey to farm labourer George and Ellen (nee Spencer). He was baptised on 12th June 1892 at St John the Baptist’s Church in Oakwood.

William’s father George was born in the 1st quarter of 1860 to agricultural labourer Matthew, born about 1838 and Sarah Muggeridge, born about 1840, all in Abinger, Surrey. George was baptised on 18th March 1860 at St John the Baptist’s in Oakwood. At the time of the baptism the family lived in Abinger and George was working as a labourer. William’s mother Ellen Spencer was born about 1864 in Abinger to labourer James, born about 1843 in Wotton, Surrey and Ellen, born about 1845 in Warnham, Sussex. Ellen was baptised on 11th April 1864 in Oakwood, Surrey. George married Ellen on 6th February 1892 at St John the Baptist’s Church.

William had one sister; Florence; born about 1897 in Wotton.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at Vann Platts, Ockley, Surrey. George was working as a farm labourer and Ellen was at home looking after their children: William and Florence.

At the time of the 1911 Census, William’s family resided at Ockley Green, Surrey. George was working as a farm labourer and Ellen was a housewife. The household further comprised of their daughter Florence. Ellen stated that she had given birth to two children of whom both were still alive. The accommodation had six rooms.

William Muggeridge enlisted in Hastings, Sussex into the 11th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was a Private with regimental number SD/2907.

At the time of his death he was part of the 22nd Battalion the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was a Lance Corporal.

William Muggeridge was killed in action on 24th September 1918 in France. He is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery and Memorial in France. His memorial reference number is: Panel 6. He is also commemorated on the St Margaret’s WW1 panel in Ockley, Surrey.

He received the British War and Victory medals.

William’s father George received £25, 3s and 7d on the 13th of May 1919 in Soldier’s Effects.

Williams parents later lived at Myrtle Cottage, Oakwood Hill, Surrey.
