Levi Nimrod Longhurst was born in 1881 in Shere, Surrey to Isted and Mary Ann Longhurst. He was one of eight children. In 1891, the family had moved to Cobbetts Farm, Ockley. In 1901, Levi moved to Holmbury St. Mary, where he worked with horses on a farm.
In 1905, Levi married Eliza Wigg at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Surrey. The couple, in 1911, were living at Redhill Cottage, Mayes Green, Ockley, with their three daughters. Levi was working as a labourer.
Levi enlisted in Guildford, Surrey on 9th December 1915, and was posted to the 6th Battalion, West Surrey Regiment, number G/13864.
He was 5ft 11 inches of ruddy complexion and his address was Honeysuckle Cottage, Holmbury St. Mary, Surrey. He was 35 years and 8 months and had four daughters, Mary, Florence, Grace and Dorothy.
Levi was mobilised on 3rd June 1916, and posted on 4th June 1916, then transferred to the Royal West Kent Regiment, G/17633, and posted 24th October 1916. Levi was killed in action on 5th December 1916 near Arras and was buried in Douchy Les Ayette British Cemetery, France; grave reference I.G.9.
All his medals were forwarded to Mrs Bell (half sister of Eliza) of Croydon who had taken in two of the girls when their mother died in 1919.
His younger sister Lilian Longhurst lived in Holmbury St. Mary after the war.
