Evelyn Mary Habershon was born on 6th September 1900 in Dorking to Edward Neston Williams Habershon Esq. and Amy Burton Habershon (nee Webster), she was baptised on 30th October 1900 in Holmwood, Surrey.
She had three brothers: Edward Francis born in the 2nd quarter of 1886 in Charlwood, Surrey; Sidney Heathcote born in 3rd quarter of 1889 and Philip Henry born in the 2nd quarter of 1893, both in Redhill, Surrey.
At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at Brook Lodge, Holmwood. Edward was living on his own means and Amy was at home with their children: Philip and Evelyn. The household further comprised of a cook, nurse, housemaid, parlourmaid, kitchen maid, nursery maid and a man servant.
At the time of the 1911 Census, the family lived at 11 South Parade, Bath, Somerset. The household comprised of Edward, Amy and their children: clergyman Edward and Evelyn. The household was looked after by a nurse, cook, parlourmaid and two housemaids. The house had fifteen rooms.
The 1911 Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser reads that Evelyn was one of the three little bridesmaids at the wedding of Miss Lucette Sidebottom and Mr Edmund Hinxman Gale. The marriage took place at St Paul’s church, Bath. Evelyn was the bridegroom’s cousin and the bride frequently visited Evelyn’s parents in their other house at Brooke Lodge, Holmwood. The little bridesmaids were wearing: “simple white satin frocks, with bronze velvet hats lined with pale blue silk and trimmed with shaded leaves. They wore bronze shoes and stockings, and carried bouquets of bronze chrysanthemums tied with blue ribbon. Each had a merry-thought brooch, the gift of the bride.” The Advertiser further reads: “The reception, attended by about 80 guests, was held at the house of Mr and Mrs Neston Habershon, 11, South Parade, where most of the presents, which were numerous and handsome were on view.”
Evelyn was a nurse at Anstie Grange Hospital, Holmwood, during WW1. Her brothers: Philip and Sidney were killed in the Great War.
Evelyn died on 4th November 1987 in Petersfield, Hampshire. She was 87 years old.
Habershon Family History
Evelyn’s father Edward was born on 19th January 1859 in Notting Hill, London to architect Matthew Edward Habershon Esq., known as Edward Habershon, born in 1826 in Hampstead, London, and Lady Frances Elizabeth Heathcote Habershon, born about 1822 in Wallop, Hampshire. Edward was baptised on 16th April 1859.
Edward studied at Winchester College and St John’s College, Cambridge.
At the time of the 1881 Census, the family lived at Charlwood Park, Charlwood, Surrey. The household comprised of Edward snr, Frances and their children: solicitors’ clerk Edward and Lady Alice. The family was looked after by five servants.
Evelyn’s mother Amy Burdon Webster was born in the 3rd quarter of 1861 in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland to Christopher Mailing Webster Esq., and Mary Webster. Amy was baptised on 6th September 1861 in Bishopwearmouth, where the family at the time lived.
Edward and Amy married on 18th June 1885 at St Paul’s church, Knightsbridge, London. At the time of the marriage, Edward lived at Alexandra Hotel, Knightsbridge and Amy, at Pallion Hall, Sunderland.
At the time of the 1891 Census, the family lived at the Marlpit Hill, Edenbridge, Kent. Edward was living on his own means and Amy was at home with their sons: Edward and Sidney. The household further comprised of visitors: Edward’s parents, architect Edward and Francis. The family was looked after by a nurse, parlourmaid, cook and housemaid.
Evelyn’s father Edward died on 22nd June 1933. He left to his children, Francis and Evelyn, £24,230, 11s and 7d in probate. Evelyn’s mother, Amy died on 23rd January 1942. She left to her children, Francis and Evelyn, £932 and 10s in probate.
