Harry was born in Dorking in 1882. Soon after he was born, his family moved to Egham where he was baptised in the Parish church on 4th December 1884. His parents were James, a bootmaker and Elizabeth his mother..
In the 1881 census, just before Harry was born his family are living at Heath Hill, Dorking. Harry has two brothers Samuel and James, and two sisters Elizabeth Alice and Grace.
Harry’s father James died in Egham in December 1884, soon after Harry was baptised. His mother Elizabeth moved the family to Fulham where they can be found at 19 Greyhound Road, in the 1891 census. They are still living there in 1901.
On 9th September 1901, Harry joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker. His occupation before joining was a plumber. He stayed with the navy until July 1908 when he then joined the Royal Navy Reserve. He married Elizabeth Lucy Grove in Fulham in 1907.
As Harry was in the Navy reserve he was called up to serve in 1914 at the start of the first World War. He was serving as a Stoker on HMS Cornwallis in the Mediterranean Sea. On the 9th January 1917 the Cornwallis was hit by a Torpedo from an enemy submarine. Most of her crew were saved although 15 men, including Harry died as a result of the Torpedo explosion.
He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval memorial. Panel: 26.
Harry and Elizabeth had no children, Elizabeth moved to Southampton where she died in 1949.
