Thank you to Molly Worsfold and Tim Dumas from St. Bartholomew Church in Leigh for allowing Dorking Museum to reproduce their research. Thank you to Angela Box, great granddaughter of George for the additional family information.
George Weller was born in Leigh in 1880, the son of George Weller. He probably went to school in Leigh in about 1887 when the school was near the Church, the Plough and the village pump.
He may well have served almost the whole war in the 1st Battalion, Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment and was killed in action on 16th April 1918.
George Weller has no known grave and is commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium.
Most of those commemorated by the memorial did not die in major offensives, such as those which took place around Ypres to the north, or Loos to the south. Most were killed in the course of the day-to-day trench warfare which characterised this part of the line, or in small scale set engagements, usually carried out in support of the major attacks taking place elsewhere.
He was married to Lucy Jane, then living at Mynthurst, Leigh. Lucy remarried after the war to Mr. Parsons and lived in Laurel Cottage, Leigh.
George and Lucy had three children; George (1908-1990) he also had two daughters Florence (1912-2000) and Kate Helen Longman (nee Weller (1916-1997)) being the maternal grandmother of Angela Box.
Angela visited Ploegsteert Memorial in 2023 and has kindly allowed the museum to reproduce her photographs.
