Charles was baptised on 6th September, 1882 at All Saints Church, Leamington Priors in Warwickshire. His father is William Clarke Chattaway, a wine merchant. His mother is Louisa (nee Webb). His parents married in St Peter’s Church in Worcester on 7th February 1872.
Charles has seven siblings, Alan born in 1874, Alice Elizabeth born in 1876, William born in 1877, George born in 1879, Arthur born in 1880, and Esther Dorothy born in 1885. They were all baptised at All Saint’s Church in Leamington Priors.
In 1901 his parents and sisters, Alice and Esther and brother George are living in Warwick, Charles is not living with them
In 1910 Charles emigrated to Canada and in the 1911 census of Canada he is living in the District of Kootenay in British Columbia, his occupation is Farmer.
In the 1911 census, his parents are living at Rose Hill in Dorking; William is a retired wine merchant.
He joined the Royal Canadian Dragoons in September 1914 and arrived in France in May 1915. Hospital records show that he received a Gun Shot Wound on his left side and was admitted to hospital at Rouen on 29th March 1917. He was discharged back to duty the following day. Exactly one year later Charles died on 30th March 1918. His regiment were defending Moreuil Wood.
Charles has no known grave; his name is recorded on the Canadian National Memorial at Vimy Ridge where over 11,000 men from the Canadian Expeditionary Force are commemorated.
Probate records show that he left £60 to his elder brother Edward, a journalist living in London.
Charles’s brother William served with the Imperial Yeomanry from 1899 -1902. His sister Esther Dorothy served as a volunteer nurse with the Red Cross at the Military Hospital in Devonport in 1916.
