Arthur Friday was born on 20th September 1895 in Dorking to labourer and gas stoker Arthur and Ellen (nee Strudwick). He was baptised on 4th December 1895 at St Paul’s church in Dorking, Surrey. At the time of his baptism the family lived at 23 Falkland Road in Dorking and Arthur Snr was working as a labourer.
Arthur’s father Arthur was born in the 1st quarter of 1865 in Dorking to woodman George, born about 1826 and Ann (nee Whitmore), born about 1827, both in Dorking. Arthur Snr was baptised on 12th March 1865 in Westcott, Surrey. His mother Ellen was born in the 2nd quarter of 1867 in Dorking to roadman labourer Charles, born about 1829 in Dorking and Rosetta (nee Giles) born about 1840 in Shere, Surrey. At the time of the 1891 Census, Ellen was working as a laundry maid. Arthur and Ellen married on 25th December 1891 in Dorking.
Arthur Jnr had three known siblings: Minnie born about 1894, Edward born about 1905, Surrey and George born about 1909, all in Dorking.
At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at 23 Falkland Road in Dorking. Arthur Snr was working as a gas stoker and Ellen was looking after their children: Minnie and Arthur Jnr.
On 20th April 1903 Arthur Friday was admitted into Dorking British School. At the time of his admission the family lived in Falkland Road. He left the school on 24th September 1909.
At the time of the 1911 Census, the family lived at 11 Archway Place, Dorking. Arthur Snr was still working as a gas stoker and Ellen was at home. The household further comprised of their children: general servant Minnie, shop boy Arthur Jnr, Edward and George. Ellen stated that she had given birth to four children. The house had five rooms.
Arthur Friday enlisted into the Royal Army Service Corps. He was a Private with regimental number was DM2/171058.
The 1918 Surrey Electoral Register reads that Arthur Friday Jnr and his parents lived at 11 Archway Place, Dorking, Surrey.
At the time of his death he was part of the 738th Mechanical Transport Company of the Royal Army Service Corps.
Arthur Friday died of pneumonia on 4th January 1919 in Salonica, Greece.
He was buried at the Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. His grave reference number is: 1140. The headstone bears the inscription: “Gone but not Forgotten”.
He received the British War and Victory medals.
Arthur’s father Arthur Friday Snr received £23 and 14s on 2nd May 1919 in Soldier’s Effects.
Arthur Jnr’s parents lived at the time of his death at 11 Archway Place, Dorking.
