Lance Corporal Albert Henry Jackson

Albert Henry Jackson was born on 10th August 1890 in Dorking, Surrey to agricultural labourer Stephen and Caroline Louise Jackson (nee Beedle).

At the time of the 1891 Census, the family lived at 19 Mill Lane in Dorking. Stephen was working as a general labourer and Louisa was looking after their children: William, Richard, Charles and Albert.

On 4th October 1897, Albert was admitted into the St Martin’s Church of England School for Boys. Albert left the school on 27th July 1904.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at 15 Mill Lane, Dorking. Stephen was working as a general labourer and Louisa was at home. The household further comprised of their children: billiard maker Richard, fishmonger’s errand boy Charles, Albert, Charlotte and Rose.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Albert was a barman, working at the Star and Garter Hotel in Dorking.

Albert married Flora Bathsheba Titcombe on 24th July 1913 in Wroughton, Wiltshire. At the time of their marriage Albert lived at Caledonian Arms in Bow and he was working as a barman. Flora lived in Wroughton.

Flora was born in the 3rd quarter of 1880 in Wroughton to labourer Walter John, born about 1851 in Lydiard, Wiltshire and laundress Sarah, born about 1851 Purton in Wiltshire.

Albert and Flora had a son; Albert Charles Jackson was born on 17th January 1914 in Bow.

Albert attested on 10th December 1915 in Poplar, Middlesex into the 16th Battalion the Rifle Brigade. He was a Rifleman with regimental number: S/18115. At the time of his enlistment he lived at 7 Blondin Street, Bow, where he was working as a barman. He was over 5ft tall and had a mole on his right buttock.

On 15th May 1916 he became a Lance Corporal.

Albert was on the home front from 10th December 1915 to 27th August 1916; then from 28th August 1916 to 7th of November 1916 in France serving with the BEF, from 8th November 1916 to 14th June 1917 on the home front again; and then from 15th June 1917 to 13th October 1917 serving with the BEF in Belgium.

On 21st October 1916 Albert sustained a wound in the field. On 28th October he was admitted into hospital and on the 29th his right leg became septic. He was sent back to England on 5th November 1916.

On 15th June 1917 Albert was transferred into the 1st Battalion, the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own).

On 5th September 1917 Albert was punished by seven days of confinement in barracks for falling out without permission and entering an estaminet (French bar).

Albert Jackson is presumed to have died on or since 13th October 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium.

He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing on Panels 145 to 147.

He received the British War and Victory medals. On 28th January 1918 he received the Military Medal.

Albert’s wife Flora received £2, 1s and 2d on 6th February 1919 and a further £6 on 15th December 1919 in Soldier’s Effects.

On 17th June 1918 Flora was awarded a pension of 20/5 a week for herself and a child. At the time she was living at 34 High Street, Wroughton in Wiltshire.

In 1920 Albert’s mother Caroline lived at 20 Railway Cottages, Ludgershall, Andover, Hampshire.

Albert’s father Stephen was born in the 4th quarter of 1865 in Dorking to ostler Stephen and Mary. Stephen jnr was baptised on 10th December 1865 in Dorking. His mother Caroline Louisa Beedle was born on 27th January 1863 in Newdigate, Surrey to single mother Caroline. Caroline jnr was baptised on 8th March 1863 at St Peter’s church in Newdigate. At the time of her baptism they lived in Newdigate. Her reputed father was labourer William Gray of Charlwood.

Stephen and Caroline married on 16th March 1886 at St Peter’s Church in Newdigate. Stephen lived in Dorking and worked as a blacksmith. Louisa lived in Newdigate and worked as a servant.

Albert Jackson had six siblings: William S. born about 1886; Richard John born about 1887 Fanny born about 1893, Rose E. G. born about 1899, and Daisy born about 1901, all in Dorking. Charles Jackson was born about 1888 in Betchworth, Surrey
