Albert Charles Sadler was born in the 1st quarter of 1882 in Betchworth, Surrey to labourer and gardener George Henry and Sarah Ann (nee King).
At the time of the 1881 Census, the family lived at Black Land, Betchworth. George was working as an agricultural labourer and shepherd and Sarah Ann was at home. The household further comprised of their children: shepherd boy Frederick, Margaret, Beatrice, George, Kate and Ellen.
At the time of the 1891 Census, the family resided in Mole Side in Dorking. George was working as an agricultural labourer and Sarah was at home. The family had grown to include Albert, Thomas, Alexander and Sarah Anne.
At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at Puddings Hole in Brockham, Surrey. George was working as a gardener and Sarah Ann was looking after the children at home, including new arrival Arthur. George and Albert were working at the limeworks.
Albert’s father George died in 1906 and was buried on 24th October 1906 at St Michael’s church in Betchworth.
At the time of the 1911 Census, the widowed Sarah Ann and her sons Albert and Arthur lived at Puddings Hole in Brockham. The sons were working as ground labourers. Sarah stated that she had given birth to eleven children. The accommodation had four rooms.
Albert married Frances Ede on 3rd July 1912 in Brighton.
The couple had two children: Albert Henry James born on 2nd October 1913 and Arthur Charles William Sadler born on 28th February 1916 in Dorking, Surrey.
Albert joined the Royal Garrison Artillery on 6th September 1916 in Guildford . He was a gunner with regimental number 116179. At the time of his enlistment he lived at 78 Falkland Road in Dorking and was working as a labourer. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
He served from 6th September 1916 to 8th March 1917 on the home front. As a part of the British Expeditionary Force he disembarked on 9th March 1917 in France. On 27th April 1917, Albert was posted to the 156 Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery in the field.
Albert died of wounds on 31st May 1917 at No 63 Field Ambulance in France.
He is buried at the Henin Communal Cemetery Extension in France. His grave reference number was: I.D.17.
Albert received the British War and Victory medals.
His wife Frances Sadler received £4, 7s and 1d on 15th October 1917 and a further £3 on 24th October 1919 in Soldier’s Effects.
Francis Sadler re-married Robert MacKrell on 24th December 1917 in Reigate, Surrey.

Albert’s father George was born about 1847 in Betchworth to farm labourer John, born about 1800 in Leigh, Surrey and Sarah, born about 1808 in Dorking. His mother Sarah Ann King was born in the 2nd quarter of 1868 in Dorking to labourer Frederick King, born about 1830 and Ann/Anne King nee Skilton, born about 1831, both in Dorking. Sarah was baptised on 9th December 1849 at St Mary’s church in Holmwood.
George and Sarah married on the 4th of May 1868 at St Martin’s church in Dorking. At the time of their marriage the couple lived at Park Farm and George was a labourer.
Albert Charles Sadler had ten siblings: Frederick John Sadler was born in the 4th quarter of 1869; Margaret Alice E. Sadler born in the 4th quarter of 1871, and Sarah Ann/Anne Sadler born in the 4th quarter of 1890, all born in Dorking. Beatrice Miriam Sadler born in the 1st quarter of 1874; George Sadler born in the 4th quarter of 1876; Kate Maria Sadler born in the 1st quarter of 1878; Ellen Amelia Sadler born in the 1st quarter of 1880; Thomas William Sadler born in the 3rd quarter of 1884; Alexander Ernest Sadler born in the 2nd quarter of 1888 and Arthur James Sadler born in the 3rd quarter of 1894 in Betchworth, Surrey.
At the time of the 1871 Census, the family lived at Park Farm Cottages in Dorking. George was working as a shepherd and Sarah was looking after their son Frederick.
