PTE. S. R. WITHALL

(The Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regt.)

Mrs. Withall, of 13 St. Martin’s Place, Dorking, has received official intimation of the death of her husband, Pte. Stanley Richard Withall, the Queen’s. He joined the Army in January 1915, and went out to France in the following June. His last home leave was seven months ago. He had been through most of the severe fighting of the last two years, and in a recent letter, following a big engagement, he wrote that he had come out of it “as usual all right.” His company commander in sending his sympathy to Mrs. Withall says “We had to attack a German strong point, and it proved rather a difficult job. Your husband was wounded in both legs, and lost a lot of blood. Owing to the place where he was lying being directly under the fire of a machine gun we were not able to get him in for an hour or so. He was taken down on a stretcher, but died at the field ambulance. It came as rather a shock, as we all thought he was all right. He was a very good soldier, and had recently gone through a special course of training in scouting, in which he did very well.” Pte. Withall was well known in Dorking. He was the son of James Withall of Sawdust Green, Tylehurst Lane, and before joining up was a carter on the Deepdene Estate, where his father and other members of the family had been employed for many years.
