Frederick was born in Brockham in 1896. Both his parent Charles and Eliza (nee Procud) were born in the Brockham area. His mother’s family were from the Root Hill area. In 1901, his father was working as a gardener. At that time Eliza’s father and brother were also living in the household. Frederick was the second son and the fourth of the five children in the family. By 1911 although his mother still described herself as married, his father Charles was not living at the household, although Eliza’s brother William was still there.
Frederick enlisted at Guilford into the 1st Battalion. The Queen’s Own Surrey Regiment and was killed accidentally when a bomb exploded behind the trenches at Beuvry. Frederick was killed, aged 19, on 21st July 1915 and is buried at the Beuvry Communal Cemetery
The town of Beuvry remained behind the lines for the duration of the war in, 1915 it became the depot for the Royal Engineers who started preparing for the gas attack on the German trenches at Loos in June 1915.
