Reginald John Harman born in 1897 was one of the six children of John, a builder, and Jane Harman. The family lived on the Green in Brockham.
Reginald enlisted in the 1st/9th Battalion of the London Regiment which was known as Queen Victoria’s Rifles. The London Regiment was unusual in that all its battalions were volunteers and there were no regular soldiers. At the outbreak of war the Battalion was based at Davies Street in the West End. Reginald’s death is attributed to the 1st July 1916, which was the first date of the battle of the Somme. Initially he was reported missing but his death was confirmed in May 1917.
As well as being commemorated in Brockham, and Dorking High School, (Ashcombe) his name is also on the Thiepval Memorial along side others who were killed on the Somme who have no known grave.
