Frederick John Jordan was born in the 2nd quarter of 1879 in Brockham, Surrey to Edward and Rosa (nee Edser).
Frederick’s father Edward was born about 1849, to bricklayer Joseph, born about 1811 and Sarah born about 1814, all in Betchworth. Edward married Rosa in the 2nd quarter of 1872 in Dorking. His mother Rosa was born about 1850 to bricklayer Richard, born about 1818 and laundress Julia, born about 1821, both in Shere, Surrey. Rosa was baptised on the 2nd of June 1850 at St James’ church in Abinger, Surrey.
Frederick John had thirteen siblings of whom ten are known: Edward born about 1871; Ada born about 1873; Ann born about 1874, all in Dorking. Then Frank born about 1878; Julie born about 1881; Stanley born about 1883; Leonard Jordan born about 1885; Edith born about 1887; Mary born about 1891 and Harry born about 1893, all in Brockham.

At the time of the 1881 Census, the family lived at 1 Peters Cottage, Brockham. Edward was working as a bricklayer and Rosa was looking after their children.
At the time of the 1891 Census, the family lived at Elm Cottage, Brockham. Edward was still working as a bricklayer and Rosa was a laundress. The household further comprised of their children: bricklayer Edward, laundress Ada, laundress Annie, carpenter’s labourer Frank, Frederick, Julie, Stanley, Leonard, Edith and Mary.
At the time of the 1911 Census, the family lived at Middle Street, Brockham. Edward and Rosa had the same jobs The household further comprised of their children: labourer Frederick, gardeners Leonard and Harry and a visitor, domestic servant Bessie Lucas (Frederick’s future wife). Rosa stated that she had given birth to thirteen children of whom eleven were still alive. The accommodation had seven rooms.
Frederick married Elizabeth (Bessie) Louisa Lucas in the 4th quarter of 1912 in Reigate, Surrey.
Bessie was born in the 1st quarter of 1890 in Crawley, Sussex to farm carter John, born about 1865 in Newdigate, Surrey and Isabel Clara born about 1869 in Crawley. She was baptised on the 9th of February 1890 in Crawley.
Frederick attested on the 23rd of November 1896 in Guildford into the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. He was a Private with regimental number 30996. At the time of his attestation he was working as a butcher. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. He had a scar on his right elbow. Frederick John served from 23rd November 1896 to 8th November 1898 at home; from 09th November 1898 to 26th October 1906 in India, returning home on 27th October 1906 and serving there until 22nd November when he was discharged from the Army.
After mobilisation he joined the 15th Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey regiment. He was a Sergeant with regimental number G/16972. He was later transferred into the 97th Company of the Labour Corps, where he was a Sergeant with regiment number 57847.
Frederick Jordan died on the 22nd of December 1918 at No. 50 General Hospital in Salonika, Greece. He is buried at the Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. His cemetery reference number is 1087.
He received the British War and Victory medals.
Frederick’s wife Bessie received £4, 17s and 6d on the 26th of April 1919 and a further £14 on the 28th of November 1919 in Soldier’s Effects.
