Alfred was baptised at the Holy Trinity Church in Sheerness on 27 May 1885. His Father is Alfred and his occupation is a signalman with the Royal Navy. His mother is Susan Elizabeth.
In the 1891 census Alfred is living with his mother in his Uncle’s household in Sheerness, his father being away at sea.
In the 1901 census Alfred’s family are living at 15 Alexander Road in Devonport. Alfred’s father is now retired from the Navy and Alfred Jnr is a Trumpeter with the Royal Field Artillery. He has three sisters, Clara aged 12, Hilda aged 5 and Beatrice aged 2.
Alfred joined the Royal Field Artillery on 29th March 1900. His service papers show that he was 5 feet and five inches tall, had brown eyes and black hair. He left the RFA on 9th June 1908 and transferred to the Army Reserve.
On 9th June 1910 he married Constance Clara Hartwell at St David’s Church in Islington. Alfred’s occupation, at the time, was as a postman. In the 1911 census Alfred and Constance are living at 66 Aubeck Park in Highbury. They then moved to 61 Westbourne Road where their daughter Constance Clara May was born on 8th May 1912. She was baptised at St David’s church on 9th June 1912.
Alfred then joined the Army Veterinary Corps on 20th September 1912. He was promoted to sergeant on 11th April 1916. At the time he was working at the Veterinary Hospital in Kensington. He was diagnosed with Tuberculosis in October 1916 and declared physically unfit for military service.
Alfred and Constance and their daughter then moved to Dorking and lived at 9 Jubilee Terrace. He received a pension of 37 shillings per week. He died on 17th February 1918 and is buried in Dorking Cemetery.
Constance stayed in Dorking for a few years then returned to Islington. Their daughter Constance married Albert R Mauroo in 1934 in Islington. Constance Snr married Frank G Huddlestone in 1940 and died in Edmonton in 1956.
