Private Henry Walford Doody

Thank you to Bernice Forsyth and Mary Day from Capel Local History Group for allowing Dorking Museum to publish their research. Thank you to Jane Anthony for additional research.

Harry was born in Chester In 1889, son of George and Hannah Doody. George was employed as an agricultural labourer. The 1901 census shows the family still living in Cheshire where George is employed as a stationary engine driver. By 1911 the family had moved to Stylehurst, a farm in Capel where George was still employed as a stationary engine driver.  Harry does not appear on the 1911 census.

Harry enlisted in London in the 15th battalion of the London regiment, which was known as the Civil Service Battalion, it is not known if Henry was a member of the Civil Service. At the time of enlisting his address is given as Dorking.

Harry was killed in action on 27th February, 1918. He is buried in Metz-en-Couture communal British Cemetery in France. This cemetery holds the bodies of several members of his regiment who were killed in 1917-1918.

The commonwealth war Graves Commission entry shows his parents living at Stylehurst, Capel. George’s occupation is given as Stationary Oil Engine Driver on the estate.

Harry sang in the choir of Saint John the Baptist, Capel, where there is a brass plaque in his memory.
