Hugo Legge was one of the eleven children of Colonel Edward and Mrs Cordelia Legge. At the time of his birth they were living at Holmwood Lodge. Colonel Legge who was 20 years older than his wife died in 1900.
The 1901 census saw Hugo boarding at a school in Tower Hill, Dorking. From there he went on to Haileybury and then to Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (The London Regiment) By 1911, he was a 2nd Lieutenant and was staying with his mother who had moved to Windsor.
At the outbreak of the war his battalion was stationed in Lucknow, India. They returned to England and were deployed to the Western Front in January 1915. Hugo Legge was shot in the head on 3rd May 1915 in Zonnebeke. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Ypres. His sister Lois Margaret Denny was the executor of his will.
