Ernest was born in Capel in 1879, third son of William and Louisa Ranger. They lived at 56 The Street, Capel. William was employed as a brickmaker and Louisa as a hoopshaver.
Ernest worked as a bricklayer.
Ernest enlisted at Kingston upon Thames with the 9th Battalion of the Essex Regiment. His residence at that time is given as Worcester Park. Ernest married prior to enlisting. His wife’s address is given as 1 Chasemere Cottages, Capel.
Ernest died of his wounds on the 11th of April, 1917. He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.
CAPEL MAN DIES FROM WOUNDS
PTE. E. J. RANGER (Essex Regt.)
The death, from the result of wound received in action, has been been notified of Pte. Ernest James Ranger, Essex Regt. A native of Capel, he was the youngest son of the late Mr. and William Ranger, and was for many years employed at the Ockley Station brickyard, and later at the North Holmwood brickyard. At the time he joined the Army in July 1916, he resided at Worcester Park, and went out to France in September following. Pte. Ranger, who was 38 years of age leaves a wife and twin children of about two years. A member of the Capel Wesleyans and for several years assistant of the Wesley Hall Slate Club, he was greatly respected.
