Charles was born in Merton to Edwin and Ellen Sanders. At the time of 1901 census the family are living in Charlwood.
Charles enlisted in Winchester into the 13th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. He gave his residence as Dorking.
Charles was killed in action on the 12th of September, 1918. He is buried in the Fifteen Ravine British Cemetery in France. Charles was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal posthumously.

Charles William Sanders, DCM
For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership.
He took command of his platoon during an advance when his platoon commander became a casualty and led it to the objective. When one of the flanks became exposed owing to the troops on the left being held up, he carried out a valuable reconnaissance under heavy fire. He set a splendid example of initiative to his men.
