Born in Mickleham, Dorking 1895, where his Scottish father Andrew was a farm bailiff at Warren Farm, High Ashurst. His mother Edith Ellen Gordon, then aged 28 was from Bucks, and their family included older children Christina and Andrew. Another son Douglas was born in 1899.
In the 1901 census, Alexander was living in Sheffield with uncle Alexander Gordon (aged 40, a fish dealer from Scotland) and his wife Mary (from Sheffield). Alexander’s father Andrew had died in 1899 and his mother was now a Lodging House keeper in Carshalton Road, Sutton.
In the 1911 census Alexander was back with his mother Edith and four siblings, in Sutton at Sandown Villa, Benhill Road. Alexander was 15 and a clerk at Smith & Son newsagents.
Enlisted in London as Private in London Regiment (London Scottish), 1st/14th (County of London) Battalion. This Regiment was part of the Territorial Force, formed in August 1914 and arrived in France September 1914.
He died of wounds on 26th September 1915. His grave is in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemy, Pas de Calais, France. I B 16
