Private in the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) 11th Battalion – Service number G/702. Died 21st October 1915.
James Charles O’Byrne was born in Capel, Dorking circa 1878. His family lived in Knowle St, Capel. His father James was a gardener from Ireland, and his mother Alice was from Hertfordshire. James was the eldest of 12 children. (source 1891 Census)
The 1901 Census records him in HM Prison Llanbeblig, Caernarvon, N Wales.
In 1904 James Charles married Elizabeth Emma Bexley, a widow aged 32. James was then aged 28, working as a cellarman. The wedding was in Mitcham and the couple lived in Leonard Rd, Lonesome, Mitcham.
By 1911 James and Elizabeth had a daughter Mary Kathleen 6, and a son Brendan Patrick 4. They lived in Downs Rd Sutton and James was an attendant at the nearby L.C.C. Asylum.
Enlisted in London as a Private in the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) 11th Battalion – Service number G/702.
Died 21st October 1915 of wounds sustained in action. His grave is in Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France Plot M 13.
