George Guy Craxford was born in 1885 in Islington London the seventh son of James, a greengrocer, and Frances Alice Craxford. The Croxford family appears to be rooted in north London and as far as known does not have any connection with the Dorking or the Holmbury area. George does not appear on either the 1901 or 1911 census but when he enlisted on 26th January 1915 he gave his occupation as being a butler.
He married Ellen Elizabeth White in Wimbledon in April 1915. In 1911 she was working as a housemaid at Hopeden, Holmbury St Mary. It is possible that they met while both working at this address. She was living at Wimbledon at the time of his death.
George joined the 16th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge, Middlesex Regiment with the regimental number G/1487
George Croxford died as a result of his wounds, probably at the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station at Bethune on 28 December 1915. At that time there was no specific offensive action being taken.
