Corporal Charles H Young was born in 1893. He enlisted in the 7th Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment (G2093) at Guildford, and he gave his address as being Holmbury St Mary.

Official intimation was received on July 31st of the death, during the great advance of July 1st, of Corpl. C. H. Young, of the Queen’s R. W. S. Regt. He joined the Colours on Sept 9th, 1914, was made Lce-Corpl. in the following November, and full Corpl. in March 1915. He had been in France since July of last year. He was employed in the gardens at Goddards, Abinger Common, and Wotton House; he had many friends in these parishes, with whom he was very popular.

He was killed in action on the 1st 1916 aged 23, and was buried at Dantzig Alley British Cemetery at Memetzt. All his effects were left to his fiancée Florence Jane Longhurst of 2 Feldmore Cottages, Holmbury St Mary, there was a war gratuity and some £18 of back pay.
