Beatrice (Tilly) Shilling (1909 – 1990) was an aircraft engineer whose ingenuity and skills played a vital part in the saving the lives of Britain’s fighter pilots in the Second World War. When a serious flaw was found with the Merlin engines that powered the Spitfire & Hurricane fighter planes, it was Beatrice who came up with the ultimate quick-fix solution.
She was eventually awarded an OBE for her pioneering work as an engineer.
