Charles was born on 11th April 1881 and baptised at St. Lukes church in Chelsea. His parents were Thomas Herbert, a retired Lieutenant Colonel and Margaret (nee McClean).
Charles joined the 4th Queens Own Hussars on 10th January 1900 as 2nd Lieutenant. A year later he was promoted to Lieutenant and then in 1905 he became a Captain.
On the 10th September 1908, Charles married Beatrice Barlow-Webb in Holmbury Parish Church, and in the 1911 census Charles and Beatrice are living at Parkhurst in Abinger with Charles’ parents. They have one daughter Eileen Margaret, who in 1911 was 18 months old.
Charles and Beatrice eventually moved to Foxhanger in the parish of Compton, where they had three more children: Thomas Henry in 1912, Charles Ian in 1914 and John Maurice in 1918.
The 4th Hussars went to the Western Front in 1914 and were involved in the Retreat from Mons and the 1st and 2nd battles of Ypres.
Charles died on 1st March 1919 at Branksome Tower Hotel in Dorset. He is buried in the family grave in St James Churchyard in Abinger.
A Memorial Cross with the names of local soldiers who died in WW1 was presented to the village by Charles’ mother Margaret.
