Owen Withers (b late 1893) was the youngest son of Edward (a self-employed organist) and Charlotte Maria Withers of 6 Vincents Road, Dorking. He attended the High School.

Private Owen Withers of the 12th County of London (the Rangers), youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Withers, of Vincents Road, Dorking, was for ten days in the trenches around Zonnebeke, and after some sever fighting retired to St. Julien, at which place he was severely wounded in the head on April 26th. Pte. Withers had a very narrow escape, and he was afterwards taken to Havre, subsequently being removed to the Londonderry Hospital. He arrived at Dorking on Thursday and during the past week he has been greeted by numerous friends.

Owen first went to France in March 1915. He was severely wounded at St Julien the following month.

CORPL. OWEN WITHERS

(12th County of London), Reported Missing

Mr. and Mrs. E. Withers of Vincents Road, Dorking, have been officially notified that their youngest son, Owen has been missing since September 9th. Corpl. Withers, who belongs to the 12th County of London (The Rangers), was severely wounded at St. Julien in April last year. After making a good recovery he returned to France about twelve months ago.

He was initially reported missing and then confirmed to have been killed on 9th September 1916. He was a corporal (2454) in the 1st/12th Battalion County of London Regiment (The Rangers). He has a special memorial (shared with Gilbert Smithers) in St Martin’s church. He is also commemorated on the St Paul’s Church memorial.
