In 1934 Dorking was home to  103 separate trades, professions and services, including a masseur, 8 dentists, 10 doctors, 10 hairdressers, 10 bakers, 11 outfitters, 11 builders, 12 drapers, 12 greengrocers and fruiterers, 14 boot and shoe shops, 14 tearooms and restaurants, 14 menswear shops and tailors, 15 butchers, 16 motor garages and service stations, 17 tobacconists, 23 confectioners, and 23 grocers.  

There were 114 retail outlets in the High Street, 45 in South Street, 40 in West Street and 10 in Dene Street.
