Private Herbert English

Herbert English was born in the 4th quarter of 1886 in Dorking, Surrey to carpenter George and Sarah Frances (nee Worsfold). He was baptised on 28th February 1892 at St Martin’s, Dorking. At the time of his baptism the family lived at 10a Orchard Road, Dorking and George was working as a carpenter.

Herbert’s father George was born in the 1st quarter of 1850 in Dorking to carpenter James Apsey English, born about 1807 in Lewes, Sussex and Elizabeth (nee Grinstead), born about 1814 in Warnham, Sussex. George was baptised on 25th January 1850 at St Martin’s, Dorking. George English married Sarah Frances Worsfold, on 25th June 1876 at St Paul’s in Dorking. At the time of the marriage George was working as a carpenter. Sarah was born about 1842 in Mickleham, Surrey. At the time of the 1851 Census, Sarah was living with her grandparents, labourer John and Sarah at Westhumble, Surrey.

Herbert English had four siblings: Nina born about 1878; Mabel born about 1879; Laura born about 1881 and George born about 1883, all in Dorking.

At the time of the 1881 Census, joiner George lived at Orchard Road, Dorking. The household further comprised of his wife Sarah, their daughters Nina and Mabel and a boarder, joiner George A. Taylor.

At the time of the 1891 Census, the family lived at 10 Orchard Road. George was working as a carpenter and joiner and Sarah was looking after their children. The household further comprised of a boarder Michael Charman.

At the time of the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, the family were still at 10a Orchard Road. Daughter Mabel was working as a dressmaker and son George was working as a draper’s assistant.

Frances stated, in 1911, that she had given birth to five children of whom four were still alive. The accommodation had five rooms.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Herbert and his brother George lived at 180 Stephendale Road, Fulham, London. The brothers were working as confectionary shop keepers. The accommodation had three rooms.

Herbert’s mother Sarah died in 1916. She was buried on 20th March 1916 at St Martin’s church, Dorking.

Herbert English was part of the Queen’s Royal East Surrey Regiment. He was a Private with regimental number 34118. He also served as a Private in the Labour Corps, with regimental number 341182.

Herbert English died on 8th May 1920 aged 33. He was buried on 13th May 1920 at St Martin’s, Dorking, Surrey. He died after his discharge from the army. He was single.

Herbert’s father George English died in 1932. He was buried on 4th February 1932 at Dorking Municipal Cemetery.
