William Richard Gurney Jones was born in 1893 in Hackbridge, Surrey. The son of William and Maria, William had one younger brother. He was baptised on 7th October 1894 at Beddington in Surrey.
In 1901, the family were living at 100 Vestry Road, Camberwell.
In 1911, William was still living with his family, although they had moved to 1 Adeline Cottage, Wells Road, Guildford, Surrey. William was working as a milkman.
William married Phyllis Bessie Cook on September 7th 1913 in Dorking. They set up home together in 3 Humphreys Cottages, Dene Street Gardens, Dorking.
William joined the 3rd / 4th Battalion of The Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment as a Lance Coporal with the Army number G/1357.
William was killed in action on 5th November 1917 at the Battle of Passchendaele aged 24. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke Panel 14 to 17 162 to 162A
