Medieval Betchworth

Wotton Hundred © British History.com

The medieval manor of Betchworth included Brockham and parts of Charlwood, Leigh and Newdigate, situated within the Wotton Hundred. In the early medieval period it was owned by the de Warenne family who were lords of the manor. In the 1300s a population of about 400 people lived in and around the village.

Most of the villagers made their livings in agriculture and related trades, either working on the lord’s land, or farming their own lands. Much of what was consumed in the manor was grown and produced there.
