Private Albert Edward England

Albert Edward England was born in the 3rd quarter of 1890 in Capel, Surrey to Charles and Katharine (nee Dixon).

Albert’s father Charles was born about 1862 in Stifford, Essex to agricultural labourer Hosea and Eliza. His mother Katharine was born in the 2nd quarter of 1866 in Holdenby, Brixworth in Northamptonshire to labourer Samuel and Sarah. Catherine was baptised on 1st July 1866 in Holdenby. Charles and Catherine were married in the 3rd quarter of 1887 in Brixworth.

Albert had two brothers: Francis Frederick and George Walter.

At the time of the 1891 Census, the family lived at Arnolds, Capel. Charles was working as a gardener and Catherine was looking after their sons Francis and Albert.

Catherine died in the 1st quarter of 1899 in Dorking, leaving behind her husband Charles and three sons. Charles remarried Susan Maxlow on 25th November 1900 in Chislehurst, Kent. Susan was born about 1865 in Shrewsbury.

By the time of the 1901 Census, the new family lived at Townshend Road in Chislehurst. Charles was working as a gardener and Susan was looking after her step-sons Francis, Albert and George. The family had also a boarder: gardener James Pearce.

At the time of the 1911 Census, the family lived at 13 Townshend Road in Chislehurst, Kent. Charles was still working as a gardener as were his sons Francis and Albert. George was a music student. Susan was at home. The accommodation had five rooms.

Albert enlisted in Woolwich in Kent. At the time of his enlistment he resided at Chislehurst. He became the part of the 2nd Battalion Buffs (East Kent) Regiment. He was a Private with a regimental number G/5655.

Albert disembarked on 8th June 1915 to France.

Albert Edward England died on 28th September 1915 during the attack on Dump at Fosse 8 in the battle of Loos.

He is commemorated at the Loos Memorial in France on panels 15 to 19.

Albert’s father Charles received £4, 8s and 7d on 14th February 1916 and a further £3 on 9th August 1919 in Soldier’s Effects.

After WW1, Charles lived at 50 Longlands Road, Sidcup in Kent.

Albert England was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 1915 Star.
