Born in 1879 at Ryde, Isle of Wight, the son of John Henry, a porter, and Mary Ann Rashley.
In 1911 he was a domestic gardener living at the Glade, Holmbury St Mary. He enlisted at Dorking, initially in Royal Fusiliers (31439) later transferring to the 101st Company. Labour Corps (60463) He died of his wounds aged 38 on the 14th May 1918 and was buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. His legatee was his sister Florence Smiley.
