Private Ernest Croucher

Ernest was born in Dorking, and baptised at St Martins Church, Dorking in 1894. His parents are Thomas, a gardener and Ellen, who lived at 5 Leslie Road, Pixham.

By 1901, Ernest’s family lived at 9 Harrow Road, Dorking.  Ernest had four older siblings, Thomas H, Percy, Doris and Ellen. They and their father Thomas shared the home with an aunt and three cousins. Ernest’s mother Ellen had died in 1896.

Ernest enlisted in Rotherham to the 6th Service Battalion. York and Lancaster Regiment, with a regimental number of 45505.

He was killed in action in France on 1st October 1918, and was buried in location B. 4. In Sucrerie Cemetery, Epinoy.
