George Derrick Smith was born in Dorking, the son of George and Fanny, on 6th March 1896. He was baptised at St. Paul’s Church on 3rd May 1896.
In 1901, the family were living at 41 Falkland Road, Dorking. His father George was working as a house painter.
In 1911, the family were at 17 Falkland Road. George Jnr was working as a hairdresser.
George enlisted in Westminster as a private into the 7th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment, number 1992.
He was presumed dead on 24th April 1918 on the Somme, France, aged 22 and is commemorated on Panels 28/29 of the Pozieres Memorial.
