Private Harry Moore

Harry was born in the June quarter of 1878 in Horsham in Sussex. In the 1881 census he is living in Okewood Hill, Abinger with his grandmother, Ellen Moore. She has four sons: Charles 23, William, 12 Henry 10 and Thomas 8. Also another grandchild Kate aged 10.

In 1891, Harry is now living with his Uncle William, at Pullingfold Farm in Abinger. Also in the household is his Aunt Matilda Gates, her two children Ambrose and Marion and his uncle Thomas.

When the 1901 census was taken Harry is working as a Groom.  He is living in Broadstone Cottages in Okewood Hill.

On 18th November 1906 he married Charlotte Louisa Upfold at St Martins Church in Clerkenwell.  Harry’s occupation is coachman.  They then moved back to a house on the Green in Ockley and in the 1911 census they have one son, Harry William, who was baptised in the Parish church of Ockley on 10th November 1907.  On the 18th June 1911 they baptised another son, Rhgeas Vincent.

In August 1916 Harry applied for exemption against conscription, which was denied

He eventually joined the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) as a private with the regimental number G/17601. His battalion were fighting in the Balkans when Harry died of cerebral malaria on August 29th 1917. He is buried in Lahana Military Cemetery, plot III. B. 34. near the Village of Lachanas in Greece. Charlotte requested that “Rest in Peace” be inscribed on his headstone.

Charlotte and their children continued to live in Ockley.  Rhgeas married Eileen M Riordan in 1944. Charlotte did not marry again, she died in March 1968 aged 90.
