Private John Henry Pullen

John was born in Capel in 1897, second son of John Henry and Sarah Catherine Pullen (nee Knights). The couple married on 2nd November 1886 at St Stephen’s in Walworth. The couple then lived at Arnolds Cottages in Beare Green, Capel.The family was living in Beare Green.

John enlisted at Dorking into the 2nd/4th Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment.

The 2nd/4th was evacuated on 19th December 1915 from Gallipoli to Egypt where they guarded the Suez Canal until January 1917. The Division then went on to fight in the Palestine Campaign. In 1917 they took part in the First Battle of Gaza, the Second Battle of Gaza, the Third Battle of Gaza and the Capture of Beersheba. Here John was buried at  Beersheba War Cemetary. The Battalion reached Jerusalem on the 9th of December 1917. 

John was killed in action on 3rd November, 1917 aged 20 years. He is buried in the Beersheba War Cemetery in Israel.
