Private Robert Ernest Little

Robert was born in Dorking.  He was baptised in the Parish church on 16th October 1882.  His father, also Robert, is a coachman.  His mother is Jane (nee Worsfold) and they are living in Dene Street, Dorking.

His parents married at the Parish Church of Ockley on 24th July 1882.  Jane’s father is George Worsfold a labourer. Jane was born in Dorking and baptised at the Parish church in 1861. Robert Snr was born in Wigan, Lancashire.

In the 1891 census the family are living at 3 Dene Street Gardens.  Robert has one brother; Charles aged 6, and two sisters; Elizabeth aged 3 and Edith aged 1. They were all born in Dorking. The family then moved to Wigan and in the 1901 census are living in Appleton Street. Robert now has three more sisters, Eliza aged 8, Annie aged 5 and Evelyn aged 1. They were all born in Wigan.

On the 6th June 1908, Robert married Leah Dodgin at St Thomas’s Church in Wigan. His occupation is a collier. They had one daughter, Edith, who was born in 1909, and two sons Robert born in 1912 and John Francis born in 1915.

In 1911, Robert is living at 12 Appleton Street in Wigan with his wife Leah and their daughter Edith. Robert is a coal miner.

Robert died of Wounds on 29th September 1918 and is buried in Thilloy Road Cemetery near Beaulencourt in Northern France. His name also appears on the Wigan Cenotaph in Wigan.

Leah his widow married Mr Walter Marsden in St. Thomas Church in Wigan on 20th September 1919.
