Private Sidney Gordon Rose

Sidney Gordon Rose was born in 1884, the son of John Edward and Katherine.

In 1891, the family were living in Rectory Cottage, Ducklington Witney, Oxfordshire. Sidney had one brother, Bertram and two sisters; Dorothy and Alice. John was working as a gardener.

In 1901, Sidney was living with his father, John and his brother Bertram at Mount Street, Dorking. Katherine, his wife had died. Bertram would move to Maraubra, Australia.

In the 1911 census, Sidney was living with Mr & Mrs Mudge at 8 Lyons Cottages, Dorking. His occupation was house painter.

Sidney married Annie (nee Holcomb), on the 5th October 1912 at the Parish Church, Capel, Surrey.  They had two daughters Dorothy Gwendoline born 7th September 1913 and Audrey Alice born 26 June 1916.

On the 11th December 1915, Sidney enlisted in Dorking. At the time he was living at 15 Howard Road, Dorking and was a painter. He joined the Royal West Kent Regiment with the regimental number 18517.

He transferred later to the 214th Infantry Battalion. Machine Gun Corps with the regimental number 64469. Sidney was 5ft 6 1/2 inches tall with a fresh complexion.

Sidney died of gas poisoning on 19th April 1918 in France. He was buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, grave location. P. XI. L. 6B.
