William Avenell was born in Gomshall. In the 1911 census he was single, a police constable, and lodging in Bletchingley. His wife was Alice Avenell of Normandy Village, Guildford. His parents were Edmond and Ada Avenell of Bramley, Guildford.
William joined The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Number L/8495. He died of his wounds in France on 3rd January 1916 aged 29.
He is buried in Woburn Abbey Cemetery at Cinchy, France.
