William Copas was born in 1892 in Dorking, and made his living as a steel worker. He was the son of John Henry (born in Shere, Surrey 1853, died in Dorking 1904) and Mary Jane Copas (born in Newdigate, Surrey 1867, died in Dorking 1902)

In 1901, the family were living at Cotmandene Square. William attended St. Martin’s School. His parents had both died by the time William was 12, he emigrated to Australia and became a steelworker.
