Sapper P. King

Thank you to Westcott History Group for allowing Dorking Museum to publish their First World War research.

Regrettably we have not been able to establish any facts about this entry on our war memorial, and although the name of Spr.P.King is on the Holy Trinity war memorial, it does not appear on the memorial in St John’s Chapel. There is no Spr.P.King in the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission or on the Royal Engineers’ Roll of Honour in St Paul’s Cathedral. However the menu of the ‘We Thank You’ lunch held in the village after the war lists all the Westcott men who served, and this shows ‘R.King’ as one of those who lost their lives. The CWGC records include a Spr R.G.King, but his Army service record suggests his connections were with the Midlands, and not Westcott. It is possible that this entry refers to a man named King who served in another regiment; our research continues.
