In the early months of the war soldiers and recruits were often ill-supplied. The army struggled to supply enough blankets, gloves and warm clothing for the numbers of men enlisting. One local man reported to the Dorking & Leatherhead Advertiser that he and his comrades had walked all night to keep warm.

The Urban District Council called for blankets and families, schools, churches and voluntary groups all began knitting essential ‘comforts’.The needs of those serving opened up new Christmas sales opportunities for the town’s traders.
