Dorothy Margaret Marshall was born on 21st June 1895 in Ockley, Surrey to Vicar Frederick and Margaret Helen (nee Young), and was baptised on 4th August 1895 at St Margaret’s church in Ockley. At the time of the baptism, the family lived in Ockley, where Frederick was the Vicar.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family lived at the Rectory, Stane Street, Ockley, where Frederick was still Vicar, Margaret was at home with their children Eustace and Dorothy. The household further comprised of visitor Jane Gales and a governess, cook, parlourmaid and housemaid.

At the time of the 1911 Census, the family were still at the Rectory in Ockley. The family was looked after by a cook and housemaid & parlourmaid. The Rectory had eighteen rooms. Dorothy was a student at Langland House, Malvern, Worcestershire. Langland house was a school for ladies run by Miss Alice Kate Farmer.

Dorothy was a nurse at Anstie Grange Auxiliary Hospital during WW1.

Dorothy Marshall died in June 1981 in Kensington, London. She was 86 years old.

Marshall Family History

Dorothy’s mother Margaret Helen Young was born in the 4th quarter of 1868 in Kents Bank, Lancashire to landowner James Simpson Young, born about 1819 in Scotland, and Alice Ann Young, born about 1829 in Preston, Lancashire.

At the time of the 1871 Census, the family lived at Abbot Hall, Kents Bank. James was a landowner and Alice was at home with Margaret and four other children. The household further comprised of an upper nurse, under nurse, cook, upper housemaid and under housemaid. At the time of the 1881 Census, the family lived at Kents Bank, Grange. The widowed Alice was at home with her children Jane Simpson, Mary Catherine, Margaret Helen, Alice Marian, Charles Frederick, Frank Fleming and Jessie Elizabeth. The family was looked after by a housekeeper and housemaid.

Dorothy’s father was born about 1858 in London, Middlesex to William Marshall. At the time of the 1881 Census, Frederick was an undergraduate at Clare College, Cambridge.

Frederick and Margaret married on 6th August 1890 in Grange near Cartmel, Lancashire.

At the time of the 1891 Census, the family lived at 41 Hunslet New Road, Hunslet, Leeds. Frederick was a clerk in a Holy Order and Margaret was at home. The couple was looked after by a cook and housemaid.

Dorothy had three siblings: Eustace Arthur born about 1893 in Leeds, Yorkshire; Rosamond May born about 1907 and Katherine Evangeline born about 1907, both in Ockley.

Dorothy’s mother died in December 1922 in Dorking, Surrey. She was 54 years old.

The 1935 London, England, Electoral Register reads that Margaret lived at 81 Onslow Gardens, Kensington.
