Private Frederick James Martin

Frederick was born on 12th July 1881 in Coldharbour and baptised in Christ Church, Coldharbour in August of the same year. He was the first child of James and Edith (nee Etheridge) who had married in the same church the previous year.

In the 1891 census, the family are living in Coldharbour. Frederick is at school, he has three younger brothers, William, Herbert and George. James, his father is a gardener.

In the 1901 census, Frederick is living at The Bothy in Broome Hall Gardens. He is working as an Assistant Gardener.

In April 1907, he married Jeanie Ferguson in St Mathew’s Church in Redhill, they then moved to Lindfield in Sussex and according to the 1911 Census were living in Walstead Cottage in Lindfield. They had one son, Harvey James who was born in June 1908. Frederick’s parents are still living in Coldharbour, Frederick now has two more siblings, Edith Ellen aged 15 and Walter Raymond aged 13.

Frederick joined the Royal Sussex Regiment in Lindfield then later transferred to the Queens Royal West Kent Regiment.

Frederick died on 4th August 1918.  He is buried in Cambria East Cemetery, south East of Arras.

Jeanie, his wife moved to Brancaster in Norfolk.
